Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about The Egg Nest, our products, and how to order.
Ordering & Stock
How do I place an order?
All orders are placed via WhatsApp. Simply message the relevant store directly — Camperdown on +27 60 387 4869 or Chatsworth on +27 84 512 9686 — to check availability and reserve your eggs before visiting. We recommend messaging us first, especially for larger quantities.
How do I check if eggs are in stock?
The best way to check availability is to WhatsApp us before visiting. Stock varies throughout the week, so we recommend messaging us first to confirm we have your preferred size and quantity available.
Can I place an order in advance?
Yes! You can WhatsApp us to reserve your eggs before visiting the store. This is especially useful for bulk orders of 12 trays or more.
Do you offer delivery?
We are primarily a collection only business. Delivery may be arranged depending on quantity and distance.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept cash and EFT payments. Please WhatsApp us to confirm current payment options available at your preferred store.
Products & Sizes
What egg sizes do you stock?
We stock Small (43g–53g), Medium (53g–63g), Large (63g–73g) including a mixed washed and unwashed option, Extra Large (73g–83g), Jumbo (83g–93g), and Super Jumbo (93g+) eggs. Each tray contains 30 eggs. Availability of each size may vary — contact us to confirm current stock.
How much do eggs cost per tray?
All trays contain 30 eggs. Current tray prices: Small R55, Medium R60, Large (Mixed) R65, Large R70, Extra Large R80, Jumbo R90, Super Jumbo R100. Prices may change — WhatsApp us to confirm before visiting.
What is the difference between washed and unwashed eggs?
Unwashed eggs still have their natural protective bloom on the shell and may show light speckling or farm markings — this is completely normal and a sign they came straight from the farm. Washed eggs have been cleaned for a smooth, uniform appearance. Both are equally fresh and nutritious. Our standard Large Eggs are washed (R70 per tray), while our Large Eggs (Mixed) tray combines washed and unwashed eggs at R65 per tray.
Do you sell unwashed eggs?
Yes. Unwashed eggs are available through our Large Eggs (Mixed) option — 30 large eggs per tray with a mix of washed and unwashed at R65. We also sell fully washed eggs in every size from Small to Super Jumbo. WhatsApp us to confirm which options are in stock today.
Should I wash unwashed eggs before using them?
If your tray includes unwashed eggs, rinse each egg gently under cool running water just before you crack or cook with it — not before storing. Do not soak eggs in water. Refrigerate promptly after purchase, whether your eggs are washed, unwashed, or mixed.
Are your eggs free-range?
Our eggs are cage-free, not free-range. This means our hens are not kept in cages and have the freedom to move around indoors, ensuring better welfare conditions than conventional caged farming.
Can I get double yolk eggs?
Double yolk eggs naturally occur in our Jumbo (83g–93g) and Super Jumbo (93g+) sizes due to their larger size. While these sizes have a higher chance of containing a double yolk, we do not guarantee that every single egg will be a double yolk. It is a natural occurrence and part of what makes these sizes special.
What is your minimum order for bulk buying?
Our bulk buy special starts at 12 trays or more. Buying in bulk gives you better value. Contact us via WhatsApp to discuss bulk pricing.
How fresh are your eggs?
We receive fresh stock weekly. We recommend purchasing eggs as soon as new stock arrives for maximum freshness. WhatsApp us to find out when the next delivery is expected.
Stores & Hours
Where are your stores located?
We have two stores: Camperdown at 3 Goodwill Place, and Chatsworth at 317 706 Rd, Montford, Chatsworth, 4092.
What are your trading hours?
Camperdown is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Chatsworth is open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Are you open on public holidays?
Public holiday trading may vary. Please WhatsApp us before visiting on a public holiday to confirm whether the store will be open.
Can I visit both stores on the same day?
Our stores operate on different days, so visiting both on the same day is not possible. Camperdown operates Mon/Wed/Fri and Chatsworth operates Tue/Thu/Sat.
Storage & Handling
How should I store my eggs at home?
Store eggs in the main body of your refrigerator, not in the door where temperatures fluctuate. Keep them in their original carton to protect the shells and prevent odour absorption.
How long do fresh eggs last?
Fresh eggs can be safely stored for 3 to 5 weeks from the date of purchase when refrigerated properly.
Can I freeze eggs?
Whole eggs in the shell should not be frozen. However, you can crack eggs, beat them lightly, and freeze in an airtight container for up to 12 months.
